Chicago Cubs Set To Introduce Joe Maddon As New Manager Monday

CHICAGO (CBSNewYork/AP) — Recently-departed Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon will be introduced Monday as the new manager of the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs fired manager Rick Renteria after one season, and announced that they will introduce Maddon at a Monday news conference at the Cubby Bear sports bar across from Chicago’s Wrigley Field.


The Rays announced last week that Maddon had exercised an opt-out in his contract, which was due to expire after next season. Owner Stuart Sternberg said in a statement last week that the team “tried diligently and aggressively to sign Joe to a third contract extension prior to his decision.”

Maddon had managed the Rays for nine seasons, compiling a 754-705 record. He led Tampa Bay to the playoffs four times, won two AL East titles and made one World Series appearance.
