PITTSBURGH — The Chicago Cubs are on the verge of calling up another prospect.
This time it’s infielder Addison Russell, who was acquired last summer in a trade with Oakland. Russell was acquired from the Athletics in exchange for then-Cubs pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel.
According to reports Russell is expected to start tonight on WGN-TV’s game vs. the Pirates, at 6 p.m.
Russell was regarded as one of baseballs’s top young talents after Oakland drafted him with the 11th overall pick in the 2012 MLB draft.
MLB.com listed Russell as the minor leagues’ No. 5 overall prospect coming in to the 2015 season.
The Florida native has been hitting .318 at Triple-A Iowa and could be in the lineup Tuesday night when the Cubs continue their series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
