May: Analysts Like Barry Melrose ‘Just Being Lazy’ Saying Rangers Outplayed Caps in Game 3

In blanking the Rangers 1-0 for his second career postseason shutout on Monday night, Braden Holtby has reached another level for the Capitals.

The Caps, now with a 2-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal, largely have Holtby’s staunch netminding to thank for the chance to take a commanding 3-1 lead when they return to Verizon Center on Wednesday.

After adding an additional 30 saves, Holtby’s .949 save percentage and 1.54 goals against average are best among the eight surviving goalkeepers in the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“This is as good a game as I’ve seen Holtby play in a long time,” ESPN’s Barry Melrose said after the game.

Melrose actually gives all the credit for the Capitals’ win to Holtby.  Well, most, anyway.
