Tuesday afternoon, four days after being re-elected to a fifth term as FIFA president, Sepp Blatter announced he would step down from his post.
It was a startling, if welcome, announcement from a man known for being comically nonchalant to the rot within the federation, and consistently defiant to the notion that he has played any role. Even a dog will tuck its tail between its legs when confronted with evidence of its misbehaviour — a chewed up shoe dangled in its face, perhaps. Blatter, on the other hand, would just give the shoe a little sniff and saunter off to roll in the grass.
