Nationals ‘Making Progress’ on Trade for Papelbon, Who Wants to Close


WASHINGTON — The Nationals appear to be exploring every option to secure another late-inning reliever, with Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports now reporting their interest in Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon.

Not for nothing, “making progress” is the same language Rosenthal used to describe the Mets zeroing in on Tyler Clippard, whom they acquired from the Oakland Athletics later that afternoon.

The other line is equally worthy of parsing, though”Papelbon has said he will only approve deal if he can close” probably wouldn’t require much. It’s a pretty loaded implication for Drew Storen, who has 29 saves, if the Nats were to complete the deal.

Papelbon has a no-trade clause in his contract requiring his approval to any potential trades involving him, though his All-Star Media Day comments, and early-season grumbles, have made it clear more than anything, he just wants out of Philly.
